John Devine, AMFT
John is a State of California Board Certified Marriage and Family Therapist Associate license #92721. John has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Religious Studies, a Master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy, and is currently attending Alliant International University working towards his Psy.D. in Couple and Family Therapy. John has nearly ten years of experience working in the fields of spiritual health and addiction. He is certified in pre-marital prep and couple’s counseling through the Prepare and Enrich curriculums and has extensive training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and SMART Recovery.
Beginning his work as the Director of Youth Outreach at a prominent Chicago parish in 2008, John quickly realized that the issues that parish families brought to him were complex and went beyond his focus of spiritual development. Recognizing a larger need, John recruited a team and developed a program of small groups that emphasized problematic issues identified by the church community including partner conflict, self-esteem, grief and loss, and issues with drugs and alcohol. After seeing the youth outreach program grow for three years John left to pursue his Master’s in Couple and Family Therapy. During his practicum John worked with vulnerable populations on the south side of Chicago providing couple and family therapy to families struggling with trauma and addiction. Following graduation, John moved to California to pursued his doctorate and further his training in addiction. Since moving to San Diego, John has worked at almost every level of addiction care including PHP, IOP, and crisis care and is excited to continue his work in private practice.
John loves working with adolescents, teens, and their families! He works relentlessly to build authentic relationships with his clients and believes deeply in his client’s ability to grow and connect in radically different ways with the most important people in their lives. His therapeutic strategies are grounded in developing the attachment bond within families while teaching skills that help in increasing healthy communication, identifying and setting relational boundaries, and developing problem solving skills that reduce conflict. John strives to build a compassionate and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship that honors a client’s experiences and facilitates change. He is client-centered and collaborates closely to identify goals that are tailored to his client’s needs. Begin the journey of becoming the best version of yourself you can be. Get in touch!
